Mark Vance

Vance has made Nevada City, CA his home for over 35 years. He serves as Executive Director for the Nevada County Composers Cooperative, Education Coordinator for Music in the Mountains and Director/Teacher for the Young Composers Project. He has played an extensive role as a composer, conductor, educator, arranger and indefatigable advocate of new music with original compositions in every musical genre: vocal, choral, chamber and orchestral. He received his education at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and has studied composition with notables such as: Pierre Boulez, Aaron Copland, Alan Houston, Paul Palombo, Gunther Schuller and Richard Swift. His instrumental studies include clarinet, flute, alto saxophone, piano, guitar and voice. He is published with Santa Barbara Music Publishing. New York composer and friend, William Jay Sydeman remarks that "Mark Vance is the 21st century Kapellmeister of Nevada County, endlessly writing music for all venues and tirelessly promoting contemporary music in his community".
